Kwikset SmartKey locks can be rekeyed in seconds with the current working key and the SmartKey learn tool. When the working key is lost, the reset went wrong, or the cylinder is stuck, a locksmith can reset the cylinder with a dedicated tool or replace it. We rekey SmartKey locks across San Diego and match them to your other Kwikset doors.

How Kwikset SmartKey works
A SmartKey cylinder does not use pins. Instead it has a row of sliders and a sidebar. Inserting the working key, pushing the learn tool into the small hole on the face of the cylinder, and swapping in a new key moves the sliders to match the new cut. Pull the tool, and the lock is rekeyed with no disassembly.
Kwikset introduced SmartKey in 2007, and it now ships on most Kwikset deadbolts and handlesets, including the keyed versions of Kwikset SmartCode and Halo smart locks. It normally sits on the KW1 keyway, so a SmartKey lock can share a key with standard Kwikset cylinders once those are pinned to match. For other brands of smart lock, see can a smart lock be rekeyed.
DIY reset: when it works and when it does not
You can rekey SmartKey yourself when you have all three of: the current working key, the learn tool that came with the lock, and a new Kwikset key that is cut, not blank. The door must be open and the key turned to the exact position the instructions show.
Where it goes wrong: the working key is worn and does not seat fully, the tool is pushed before the key is turned the right amount, the new key is pulled while the tool is still in, or a copied key with sloppy cuts is used. The result is a lock that accepts both keys, neither key, or nothing at all. Our step-by-step SmartKey rekey guide walks through the exact sequence and the common failure points.

Lost the working key? What a locksmith does
Without the current key the learn tool is useless, because the cylinder only enters learn mode with a matching key inserted. Locksmiths carry a SmartKey reset cradle that mechanically returns the sliders to a neutral state so the cylinder can be taught a new key. It takes a few minutes per lock.
If the cylinder has been forced, over-turned, or is physically damaged, we replace it. Kwikset sells replacement SmartKey cylinders and we keep them on the truck, so the lock body stays on the door and the finish still matches.
Builder homes and new construction
Many new tract homes in San Diego County come with Kwikset SmartKey on every exterior door, from Otay Ranch and Chula Vista to 4S Ranch, San Marcos and Del Sur. The builder's crews used those locks for months before you got the keys.
Resetting every cylinder on handover day removes any construction-phase key, and we pin the rest of the house to match so you end up with one key. It is the same visit as a new home rekey, just faster.
SmartKey and keyed alike
Because SmartKey is normally on the KW1 keyway, every SmartKey lock in the house can be set to the same key, and standard Kwikset cylinders can be pinned to that same key. That gives you one key for the whole house without replacing anything.
What SmartKey cannot do is share a key with Schlage, Baldwin on the C keyway, or anything else on a different profile, and it cannot be master keyed, so rental buildings that need a master run on conventional cylinders. If the front door is Schlage and the rest is SmartKey, we either swap the front cylinder or replace that lock. The keyed alike page covers the options.
Should you keep SmartKey or upgrade?
Keep it if you like the ability to rekey yourself in seconds and the lock is in good condition. Kwikset markets SmartKey as bump resistant, and SmartKey deadbolts are sold in ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, 2 and 3 versions depending on the model, so a builder-grade unit can be swapped for a Grade 1 SmartKey deadbolt without changing your keys.
Consider upgrading the front door if you want a heavier deadbolt, a keyway that matches Schlage hardware elsewhere in the house, or a smart lock. Some owners also prefer a standard pinned cylinder simply because any locksmith can service it with basic tools. Either way we can replace the deadbolt and match the rest of the house.
SmartKey service across San Diego
SmartKey resets are routine work in newer communities like Carmel Valley and Torrey Highlands, in the newer subdivisions of Santee, and in rentals everywhere, usually because a previous owner or tenant reset the lock and kept the key. We come to you anywhere in the county, usually the same day, with the reset cradle and spare cylinders on the truck. Request a quote with the number of doors.
Kwikset SmartKey Rekey: common questions
Can a Kwikset SmartKey lock be rekeyed without the original key?
Yes, by a locksmith. The learn tool only works with the current key inserted, but a SmartKey reset cradle returns the cylinder to a neutral state so it can be taught a new key. If the cylinder is damaged, we replace it while keeping the lock body on the door.
Why does my SmartKey lock still accept the old key after rekeying?
The reset did not complete. Usually the learn tool was pushed before the key reached the correct position, or the new key was removed while the tool was still in. The fix is to run the sequence again correctly, or have us reset the cylinder if it no longer enters learn mode.
My key turns but the lock will not go into rekey mode. What happened?
Most often the key is worn or is a poor copy that does not seat every slider, or the cylinder has been forced at some point. Try an original Kwikset-cut key first. If that fails, the cylinder needs a reset with the cradle tool or a replacement.
Are Kwikset SmartKey locks secure?
They are reasonable residential locks. Kwikset markets SmartKey as resistant to bumping and picking, and SmartKey deadbolts are sold in ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, 2 and 3 versions depending on the model. For a front door, choose a Grade 1 or Grade 2 unit and pair it with a reinforced strike plate and long screws.
Can I make my Schlage and Kwikset SmartKey locks share one key?
Not as they come. Standard SmartKey locks are on the Kwikset KW1 keyway and Schlage uses SC1; the keys physically do not fit each other's cylinders. To get to one key, the odd lock gets a cylinder swap (Kwikset also makes SmartKey cylinders in the SC1 keyway) or a replacement in the matching family.
Do Kwikset Halo and SmartCode smart locks use SmartKey?
The keyed versions do. That means they rekey the same way and can share a key with your other Kwikset doors. Their codes and app settings are separate from the key and are reset through the lock itself or the Kwikset app.
