Ultraloq, made by U-tec, is the affordable way to put fingerprint entry on a front door, garage entry or ADU. The U-Bolt Pro combines a fingerprint reader, an anti-peep keypad, Bluetooth app access and a physical key, with a Wi-Fi version for remote control. We install it across San Diego County, enroll every finger and code, connect the app and confirm the key override works before we leave.
What you get
- Fingerprint, keypad, app and key backup on one deadbolt
- Every household finger and code enrolled and tested before we leave
- Wi-Fi bridge or Wi-Fi model set up for remote access, Alexa and Google
- Key override checked and rekey options confirmed on site
- A practical fit for kids, garages, ADUs and rentals
Why fingerprint entry suits San Diego households
A fingerprint is the one key nobody loses, forgets at school or hands to a stranger. That is why Ultraloq ends up on so many family front doors and garage entry doors: the kids get home, press a thumb, and walk in.
The same logic works for an ADU tenant who should not be carrying a key to your main house, a garage that doubles as a gym, and a rental where you would rather delete a fingerprint than collect a key. Because the U-Bolt Pro also has a keypad, a physical key and app access, everyone in the household can use whichever method suits them.
Ultraloq is also the lower-priced route to fingerprint entry. Premium brands charge more for a similar feature set, so for a second door or a rental it is often the sensible spend. See how it compares with other brands.
The Ultraloq lineup: U-Bolt Pro, U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi, U-Bolt and Latch 5
Ultraloq is the smart lock brand of U-tec. The models we install most, and how they differ:
| Model | Fingerprint | Keypad | Key override | Remote access | Door type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| U-Bolt Pro | Yes | Yes, anti-peep | Yes | Bluetooth only; add a bridge for Wi-Fi | Deadbolt |
| U-Bolt Pro Wi-Fi | Yes | Yes, anti-peep | Yes | Wi-Fi built into the lock; Alexa and Google Assistant | Deadbolt |
| U-Bolt | No | Yes | Yes | Check the exact model | Deadbolt |
| Latch 5 | Fingerprint version only | Yes | Yes | Wi-Fi built in (Fingerprint version) | Lever handle |
The U-Bolt Pro is the one most people mean when they say Ultraloq. The plain U-Bolt drops the fingerprint reader and keeps keypad and key, a good pick for a side door. Latch 5 is the lever-style lock for doors that need a handle rather than a deadbolt, such as an ADU door or a small office. Ultraloq sells several versions of each model, so we confirm the current spec of the exact unit before you buy.

Installation and U-tec app setup
The U-Bolt Pro fits the standard residential deadbolt prep, the same 2-1/8 inch bore and 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset as a regular deadbolt, so on most doors it is a straight swap. The exterior unit is chunkier than a plain deadbolt, which matters on narrow stiles and some HOA doors, and we flag that before we start.
- Door check. The bolt has to throw freely with the door closed. A binding strike drains batteries and stalls motors, so we fix alignment first.
- Mount and calibrate. Exterior and interior units squared up, cable routed cleanly, then the lock learns its bolt travel.
- App pairing. We set up your U-tec account, pair over Bluetooth and make you the owner with admin rights.
Wi-Fi bridge or built-in Wi-Fi?
The current U-Bolt Pro WiFi has Wi-Fi built into the lock, so remote lock and unlock, notifications and Alexa or Google Assistant need no extra box, at the cost of heavier battery use. The Bluetooth-only U-Bolt Pro gets the same remote features through U-tec's plug-in Bridge WiFi Adaptor, sold separately or in a bundle, which needs an outlet within Bluetooth range of the door. Both are common on San Diego doors, so tell us which you have, and if remote access matters we test Wi-Fi signal at the door on install day.
Enrolling fingerprints and codes properly
Most "the fingerprint never works" complaints trace back to a rushed enrollment. We do it the slow way on install day:
- Enroll each person's finger several times at slightly different angles and pressures, the way you actually press it when carrying groceries.
- Enroll a second finger for each person, ideally on the other hand.
- Give everyone a personal code as well, so a cut or wet finger never locks anyone out.
- Set the owner code and app admin, then remove the factory defaults.
The keypad is anti-peep: you can type random digits before and after your real code and the lock still opens, so someone watching over your shoulder cannot learn it. Codes for a cleaner or a guest are added and removed in the app. Capacities vary by model, so check the exact unit if you need a large number of users.
Key override, rekeying and emergency power
The U-Bolt Pro keeps a physical key override on the exterior unit. Keep that key somewhere sensible, because it is the backup for every electronic failure at once.
Rekeying an Ultraloq is more limited than rekeying a Schlage or Kwikset. The cylinder is the manufacturer's own, so whether it can be repinned to your existing key or needs a cylinder swap depends on the model, and we confirm it on site. What we can always do is reset the lock, wipe the previous owner's fingerprints and codes, and set it up under your account; see smart lock rekey and reset and can a smart lock be rekeyed.
If the batteries die with no key to hand, the U-Bolt Pro has a micro-USB port under the exterior unit. A phone power bank and micro-USB cable wake it long enough to read your finger or code. We show you where the port is on install day.
Ultraloq not working? The usual causes
Fingerprint rejected. Wet, sweaty, very dry or worn fingertips read differently from the day you enrolled. Dry the finger, try the second finger, or use your code. If one person is rejected constantly, delete and re-enroll that finger with more angles.
Keypad hard to see or unresponsive. Direct sun on a west-facing door in El Cajon or Santee washes out the keypad. Shade it with your hand; if it stays dead, check the batteries and the interior cable.
Motor grinds or the bolt stops short. Alignment, not the lock. Test with the door open; if it works, the strike needs adjusting.
App cannot find the lock. Bluetooth range, weak Wi-Fi on a built-in Wi-Fi model, or an unplugged bridge on the older setup. Stand at the door, check the bridge outlet and restart the app.

Who Ultraloq is right for in San Diego
Right for: families with school-age kids in Mira Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos; garage entry doors used more than the front door; backyard ADUs, where the tenant gets a fingerprint and a code and never a key to the main house (see our ADU smart lock guide); and rentals where you delete access instead of chasing keys. Hosts who visit their own rental like it too: a finger for the owner, codes for guests.
Less right for: HOA doors where the exterior must stay slim or match a building finish, because the U-Bolt Pro is a visibly bulkier unit; read the HOA and condo lock rules first and consider a Level Bolt instead. Apple households that want Home Key should look at the Schlage Encode Plus. And if you want no app at all, a keypad-only deadbolt is simpler.
Ultraloq Smart Locks: common questions
Does the Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro need Wi-Fi?
No. Fingerprints, codes and the key all work at the door with no internet, and the app connects over Bluetooth when you are nearby. Wi-Fi only adds remote lock and unlock, notifications and voice assistants. The U-Bolt Pro WiFi version has Wi-Fi built in; the Bluetooth-only version adds it later with U-tec's plug-in bridge.
Why does my Ultraloq fingerprint not work?
Usually the finger, not the lock. Wet, sweaty, very dry or worn fingertips read differently from the enrollment. Dry your finger, try your second enrolled finger, or use your code. If the same person is rejected constantly, delete and re-enroll that finger several times at different angles. If nobody can get in, check the batteries.
What if the Ultraloq batteries die and I am locked out?
Use the physical key, or connect a phone power bank to the micro-USB port on the outside of the U-Bolt Pro. That powers the lock long enough to unlock with your finger or code. Then replace the batteries. The app and the lock both warn you before it gets to that point.
Can an Ultraloq lock be rekeyed?
Sometimes. The U-Bolt Pro has a real key override, but the cylinder is the manufacturer's own rather than a standard Schlage or Kwikset keyway, so options are more limited. Depending on the model we can repin it, swap the cylinder, or reset the lock and keep the key you have. We confirm on site.
Is Ultraloq a good lock for an Airbnb or rental?
It works well when you or a local co-host visit often, since a fingerprint is faster than a code and guests still get their own codes. For a rental you manage from a distance, get the Wi-Fi version so codes can be changed remotely. Many hosts choose a Schlage Encode or Yale Assure Lock 2 instead for scheduled guest codes; we set up either.
Will an Ultraloq fit my door?
The U-Bolt Pro fits the standard deadbolt prep found on most San Diego doors: a 2-1/8 inch bore and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. The exterior unit is larger than a plain deadbolt, so very narrow stiles and doors with handleset trim close to the deadbolt need a look first. Send a photo and we will tell you.
