Smart Lock Battery Died and You're Locked Out? Do This

Quick answer

Most full-replacement smart locks have a physical key override under the keypad. Yale key-free models and Kwikset's key-free Obsidian have 9-volt terminals on the bottom of the keypad: hold a fresh 9-volt to them and enter your code. Ultraloq takes USB power from a power bank. August and Level Bolt open with the original deadbolt key. No key and no terminals means a locksmith, not a pry bar.

Key takeaways

  • Almost every smart lock has a no-power backup: a key override, 9-volt terminals under the keypad or a USB port. Find yours before you need it.
  • Never pry the keypad. It is the most expensive part of the lock and prying it does nothing to the bolt.
  • Codes survive a dead battery on nearly every model. Fresh alkaline batteries and you are back to normal.
  • Early battery death is usually a bolt that binds against the strike plate, not a bad lock. Fix the door.
  • Wi-Fi locks run for months, not years, on a set of batteries. Turn on low-battery alerts and keep a spare override key reachable.

A dead battery is one of the few smart lock problems you can fix standing on the porch, as long as you know which backup your lock has. Every full-replacement smart lock ships with at least one: a key override, a pair of 9-volt terminals, or a USB port. Retrofit locks keep the deadbolt key you already had.

Here is how to get in tonight, what to do once the door is open, and how to make sure it does not happen again.

How do you get in right now?

Forget the app. When the batteries are flat, the radio is flat too, so your phone cannot help until the lock has power. Start at the door.

Locks with a physical key override

Most full-replacement smart locks, including the Schlage Encode, the keyed Yale Assure Lock 2 and the Kwikset Halo, still have a normal key cylinder. On some models the keyway is in plain view below the keypad. On others a small cover slides or lifts off to expose it.

Turn the key exactly as you would on a plain deadbolt. The key moves the bolt mechanically, with or without power, which is why we tell every customer to keep the override key even if they never plan to use it. Which locks have a keyway is covered brand by brand in Can a Smart Lock Be Rekeyed?

Locks with 9-volt terminals under the keypad

Yale’s key-free Assure Lock 2 and Kwikset’s key-free Obsidian have two small metal contacts on the underside of the exterior keypad. Touch the terminals of a fresh 9-volt battery to those contacts, hold it steady, and the keypad wakes up. Enter your code with the battery still pressed in place and the bolt retracts.

A stale 9-volt from the junk drawer may not have enough charge. A gas station or corner store will have a fresh one. Keep it pressed against the contacts until the door is open. Our Yale page covers the key-free models in more detail.

Locks with a USB power port

The Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro and some other fingerprint locks have a port on the outside of the lock for emergency power. Plug in a phone power bank with the right cable, give it a moment, then use your fingerprint or code as normal. The connector type varies by generation, so check your manual and keep a matching cable in the car. More on the family on our Ultraloq page.

Retrofit locks: August and Level Bolt

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock replaces only the interior thumb-turn, and the Level Bolt replaces only the bolt mechanism inside the door. Both leave the original exterior deadbolt cylinder in place. When their batteries die, the door is just a deadbolt again: use the key that opened it before the smart lock went on. Details on our August page and Level page.

If your lock is not one of the above, check your model’s manual before assuming anything. Some locks have more than one backup, and some have only the key.

What if you have no key and no terminals?

Call a locksmith. We open the lock through its cylinder or by other non-destructive methods, put fresh batteries in, and look at why it died before we leave. Smart lock repair and troubleshooting is a same-day visit in most cases.

Do not pry the keypad. It is the most expensive part of the lock, prying it does nothing to the bolt, and a cracked exterior housing turns a battery swap into a full lock replacement. A screwdriver in the keyway is the same story.

If you are a guest at a vacation rental in Mission Beach or anywhere along the coast, message the host before you call anyone. Many hosts keep an override key in a lockbox nearby or have a co-host close enough to bring one.

What should you do once you are inside?

Getting in is half the job. Spend five minutes on the rest so you are not back on the porch next month.

  1. Replace every battery with fresh alkaline cells from the same pack. Most smart locks are designed around alkaline. Rechargeable and lithium cells sit at different voltages and can trigger false low-battery warnings or odd behavior. Follow the maker’s instructions if they specify something else.
  2. Check your codes. On nearly every model the codes live in memory that does not need power, so they come back when the batteries do. Test each code you rely on.
  3. Reconnect Wi-Fi if it dropped. Most locks rejoin on their own once powered. If the app still shows the lock offline after a few minutes, follow the reconnect steps in the app. Do not factory reset as a first move. That wipes codes and pairing you would then have to rebuild.
  4. Listen to the bolt. If it grinds, hesitates or the app reports it as jammed, the door is binding and the motor was straining. That is a repair-and-adjust visit, not a new lock.

If you got in with a 9-volt because you never had the override key, this is the moment to fix that. A smart lock rekey puts the override on your house key so the next dead battery is a non-event.

Why did the batteries die early?

A set of batteries that lasted a few weeks is a symptom. The usual causes, in the order we find them:

  • A bolt that binds against the strike plate. The motor has to force the bolt into a pocket that is slightly off, so every lock and unlock draws far more current than it should. Sagging doors on older tract homes in Mira Mesa and Clairemont are typical. Test it: if the lock runs smoothly with the door open and struggles with it closed, the door is the problem.
  • Wi-Fi. A lock with built-in Wi-Fi runs for months, not years, on a set of batteries. One at the edge of router range spends its life reconnecting and drains faster still. Bluetooth-only locks last longer between changes.
  • Auto-lock retrying. If the door does not close fully, an auto-lock feature keeps trying to throw the bolt, and every attempt costs power.
  • Cheap or mixed batteries. Bargain cells, a mix of old and new, or a mix of brands lower the voltage the lock sees and bring the low-battery cutoff forward.
  • Heat. A west-facing door that bakes every afternoon is hard on batteries and on the keypad.

How we measure bolt effort and fix the door is on the smart lock repair page.

How do you keep it from happening again?

  • Turn on low-battery alerts in the app. Most app-connected locks send a warning well before they stop, and most also flash or beep at the keypad when power is getting low. Act on the warning instead of dismissing it.
  • Put a reminder in your calendar. Change the batteries on a schedule rather than waiting for the warning, especially on Wi-Fi models.
  • Keep a spare override key somewhere you can reach. A lockbox, a trusted neighbor, your car. Not under the mat. If the lock came with the house and you never got its key, have the override rekeyed to match your house key.
  • Keep a 9-volt or a power bank and cable in the car if that is your lock’s backup.
  • Fix the door. Strike alignment, long hinge screws and a weatherstrip that does not rub are what make batteries last.
  • Choose the next lock with its backup in mind. Our best smart locks for San Diego guide lists the backup method for each pick, Schlage Encode vs Yale Assure Lock 2 vs Kwikset Halo compares the three Wi-Fi keypad deadbolts we install most, and the smart lock installation page explains what we check on the door first.

Next step

If you are locked out now and none of the backups above applies, or the lock still misbehaves with fresh batteries, book smart lock repair and troubleshooting. We open the door without damaging the lock, replace the batteries, fix the binding that drained them and leave you with a working override key.

Frequently asked questions

Will my smart lock lose its codes when the battery dies?

On nearly every model, no. Codes, schedules and app pairing are stored in memory that does not need power, so they come back as soon as fresh batteries go in. Test each code you rely on after the swap. If a code is missing, restore it from the app rather than factory resetting the lock.

How do I open a Schlage Encode with a dead battery?

Use the physical key. The Encode has a standard Schlage keyway under the keypad, and the key turns the bolt with or without power. If you never received the override key, a locksmith can open the lock without damage, replace the batteries and rekey the cylinder to your house key so you are not stuck next time.

How do I open a Kwikset Halo with a dead battery?

Use the SmartKey override key. The Halo has a normal keyway on the exterior, and Kwikset's own answer for a dead Halo is the key. Kwikset's 9-volt terminals are on its key-free Obsidian, not the Halo, so do not go looking for contacts under the Halo keypad. Once inside, replace all four AA batteries with alkaline cells and test the key.

What battery do I hold against a Yale lock to get in?

A standard 9-volt alkaline battery. On the key-free Yale Assure Lock 2 the two terminals are on the bottom edge of the exterior keypad. Press the battery's terminals against them, keep it pressed, wait a moment for the keypad to wake, enter your code, and the bolt retracts. Then replace the AA batteries inside the interior unit right away.

Can I use rechargeable batteries in a smart lock?

Only if the maker says so. Most smart locks are designed around alkaline cells. Rechargeable and lithium cells sit at different voltages, which can trigger false low-battery warnings or cause the lock to stop early with no warning at all. Fresh alkaline batteries from the same pack are the safe default.

Can a locksmith open a dead smart lock without damaging it?

Yes, in most cases. We work through the key cylinder or use other non-destructive methods, then replace the batteries and check why they drained. Prying the keypad or forcing the housing is what causes damage, which is why we tell people to leave it alone and call.
