Why Schlage is the smart lock we install most

Schlage builds the Encode around a heavy deadbolt with a real keypad, built-in Wi-Fi and a standard Schlage C keyway. That last part matters more than any app feature: the cylinder behind the keypad is the same one found in millions of Schlage deadbolts, so any locksmith can rekey it and key it alike with your other doors.

The Encode runs on four AA batteries, pairs with the Schlage Home app with no hub, works with Alexa and Google Home, and has auto-lock and a built-in alarm sensor. If the batteries die, the physical key opens the door.

We install every brand on our brands page. Schlage is the one we reach for when someone wants a set-and-forget lock on a primary door, and our Encode vs Assure vs Halo comparison shows where the others win.

Which Schlage fits which household

  • Alexa or Google Home, one main door: Encode Deadbolt. Codes for the family, the app for you, no hub.
  • iPhone and Apple Watch household: Encode Plus, so an iPhone tap unlocks it with Apple Home Key.
  • Door with a handle rather than a deadbolt: Encode Lever, for garage entries, side doors and small offices.
  • SmartThings or Ring Alarm already running: Connect, in the Z-Wave or Zigbee version your hub uses.
  • No app wanted: a Schlage keypad deadbolt or lever, programmed at the door.
  • Rental with no keys at all: every Schlage has a keyway; look at the key-free Yale Assure Lock 2.

Trims include Camelot (arched), Century (squared) and, on the Encode, the newer Greenwich. Finishes include matte black, satin nickel, aged bronze and bright chrome. Near the water in Point Loma or Pacific Beach, salt air is hard on any finish; rinse the lock now and then and have the cylinder serviced when the key stiffens.

Installing and pairing a Schlage Encode

An Encode install takes under an hour on a standard door, and most of that time goes into the door.

  1. Check the door. The Encode needs the standard 2-1/8 inch bore and a door within the thickness range on the box. Older doors in North Park and Kensington sometimes need the bore enlarged or the strike moved first.
  2. Fix alignment. The bolt must throw fully with the door closed and no pressure on the handle. A rubbing bolt is what kills batteries and motors.
  3. Mount and test. Exterior keypad, interior assembly, batteries, then we run the bolt from the keypad, thumb-turn and key.
  4. Pair. Schlage Home app, your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a firmware update, then Alexa or Google Home. On the Encode Plus we add the lock to Apple Home and set up Home Key on your iPhone.
  5. Codes and settings. User codes, auto-lock timing, keypad sounds and the alarm sensor, then a walkthrough.

Rekeying a Schlage Encode and keying it alike

The Encode, Encode Plus, Encode Lever, Sense and Connect all use a standard Schlage C keyway. We pull the cylinder, repin it to a new key or one you already carry, and refit it in about ten minutes. The electronics are untouched and your codes stay put.

The best version of this is keyed alike: the Encode, the garage entry deadbolt and the side gate all on one Schlage key, with the keypad handling daily use. That works when the other locks are Schlage too. Homes on Kwikset keys, which covers many newer builds in 4S Ranch and Eastlake, either swap their other cylinders to Schlage or choose a Kwikset Halo instead.

Moving into a home with an Encode on the door? We rekey the cylinder, factory reset the lock and set it up under your account in one visit. See our smart lock rekey and reset page and can a smart lock be rekeyed.

Schlage Encode not working: what we fix

"Schlage Encode not working" usually means one of these, and most are fixed at the door.

  • Jammed or grinding bolt. Almost always the strike plate or a sagging door, not the lock. We realign and test with the door closed.
  • Batteries draining in weeks. A binding bolt or a weak Wi-Fi signal that keeps the lock reconnecting. Fresh alkaline AAs plus the real fix.
  • Offline or will not pair. The Encode needs a 2.4 GHz network with usable signal at the door. We test, re-pair and update firmware.
  • Keypad dark or unresponsive. Dead batteries first, then the exterior cable, then a worn keypad on sun-baked doors.
  • Home Key stopped working. Remove and re-add the lock in Apple Home.
  • Locked out with dead batteries. The physical key opens the door. No key? We open it, fit batteries and cut keys.

Anything else is on our smart lock repair page; smart lock battery died, locked out covers the lockout case.

Schlage Smart Locks: common questions

Can a Schlage Encode be rekeyed?

Yes. The Encode, Encode Plus, Encode Lever, Sense and Connect all have a standard Schlage C keyway behind the keypad. We rekey the cylinder on-site like any Schlage deadbolt and can key it alike with your other Schlage doors. Codes, Wi-Fi and app settings are not affected by the rekey.

What is the difference between the Schlage Encode and Encode Plus?

Both have built-in Wi-Fi, a keypad, the Schlage Home app and the same rekeyable keyway. The Encode Plus adds Apple Home support and Apple Home Key, so an iPhone or Apple Watch tap unlocks the door. If nobody in the house uses an iPhone, the standard Encode does everything you need.

Does the Schlage Encode need a hub?

No. The Encode and Encode Plus connect straight to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and are managed in the Schlage Home app. The original Schlage Sense, discontinued in 2020, is Bluetooth and Apple Home based; the newer Sense Pro is a different lock with Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. The Schlage Connect needs a Z-Wave or Zigbee hub such as SmartThings or Ring Alarm. Check the model name on the box.

What happens if my Schlage Encode battery dies?

The physical key opens the door, so keep one on your ring or with a neighbor. The lock warns you in the app and at the keypad well before the four AA batteries run out. If you have no key, we can open the door, replace the batteries and cut keys on the spot.

Why does my Schlage Encode keep going offline?

Usually weak Wi-Fi at the door, or a router that only broadcasts 5 GHz, which the Encode cannot join. Move or add an access point so the door gets a solid 2.4 GHz signal, then re-pair. If the lock also drains batteries fast, the two problems are related and we fix both.

Can you install a Schlage Encode I bought online?

Yes. Tell us the model and send a photo of the door edge and the existing deadbolt so we can confirm the bore, backset and thickness fit. We install customer-supplied Schlage locks on the same terms as ones we supply, including alignment, pairing and codes.
