Most smart lock problems trace back to a bolt that binds in the strike plate, weak or wrong batteries, a Wi-Fi signal that does not reach the door, or a loose mounting. We diagnose on-site, fix the door alignment that causes most failures, replace worn parts, and get the lock reconnected. If the lock is truly done, we say so and offer a straight replacement price.
What you get
- Jammed or grinding bolt fixed at the door, not just the lock
- Battery drain diagnosed, not just batteries swapped
- Wi-Fi and app connection restored
- Keypads, cylinders and interior assemblies repaired or replaced
- Honest repair-or-replace advice
The five problems behind most smart lock calls
After enough service calls, the pattern is clear. Nearly every "my smart lock is broken" call is one of these:
- Binding bolt. The bolt rubs the strike plate or bottoms out in a shallow pocket. The motor strains, then stalls.
- Battery trouble. Old cells, rechargeable cells with lower voltage, or a lock that drains them because of problem one.
- Wi-Fi dropouts. The router is too far, the lock is on a 5 GHz-only network it cannot see, or the signal at the door is simply weak.
- Loose or shifted mounting. Interior screws work loose, the assembly tilts, and the tailpiece no longer engages properly.
- Worn parts. Keypad membranes, fingerprint sensors, motors and cylinders do wear out, especially on sun-baked west-facing doors and salty coastal ones.
Try these checks before you call
You may fix it yourself in five minutes, and if not, you will have useful information for us.
- Open the door and run the lock. If it works perfectly with the door open and fails with it closed, the problem is alignment, not the lock.
- Put in fresh, name-brand alkaline batteries. Rechargeable and lithium cells sit at different voltages and confuse some locks.
- Check the interior assembly is snug and sitting straight.
- Confirm your phone is on the same 2.4 GHz network the lock uses, and reboot the router.
- Look for a firmware update in the app.
If it still misbehaves, send us the lock model and what you saw. Half the time we can tell you what is wrong before we arrive.

Bolt jams, grinds or will not fully extend
This is the big one. A deadbolt is designed to throw about an inch into a pocket in the frame. If the strike plate is a few millimeters off, or the door has sagged so the bolt hits the plate's edge, the motor has to force it. You hear grinding, the app says "jammed", batteries die, and eventually the motor gives up.
The fix is at the door: adjust or replace the strike, deepen the bolt pocket, tighten hinge screws into the framing with long screws, and sometimes trim a rubbing weatherstrip. We then recalibrate the lock so it learns the new bolt travel. Wood doors in Scripps Ranch and Mira Mesa homes that were hung decades ago are frequent offenders, and so are newer doors where the builder set the strike for a latch rather than a full bolt.
Batteries dying in weeks instead of months
Rapid battery drain is a symptom, not a fault. The usual causes, in order: a binding bolt making the motor work hard; auto-lock retrying repeatedly against a door that is not fully closed; a Wi-Fi lock at the edge of router range that spends its life reconnecting; cheap or mixed batteries; and, less often, a genuinely faulty board.
We measure the bolt effort, check the auto-lock behavior, test signal at the door and load-test the batteries. Fixing the underlying cause usually returns the lock to its normal battery life. If the lock itself is drawing too much current, that is a warranty conversation with the manufacturer, and we will document what we found so you can have it.
Keypad, fingerprint and app problems
A keypad that ignores touches, a fingerprint reader that rejects everyone or an app that shows the lock offline each has a short list of causes.
Keypads on doors that get afternoon sun fade and lose sensitivity over the years; on coastal doors in Encinitas, Ocean Beach and Imperial Beach, salt and moisture get into the exterior assembly. Fingerprint readers struggle with dry or dirty fingers and with enrollments done at odd angles; re-enrolling several angles of each finger fixes most of it. Offline locks are almost always a Wi-Fi or account issue, and a controlled reset and re-pair sorts them out.
Where a part has failed, we replace exterior assemblies, cylinders and interior units when the manufacturer sells them, and we tell you honestly when replacement of the whole lock is cheaper. Repair or replace?
A quick guide to how we call it:
| Situation | Usual answer |
|---|---|
| Bolt binds, batteries drain, lock otherwise fine | Repair the door, recalibrate. Lock stays. |
| Keypad faded or worn, lock under a few years old | Replace the exterior part if available; otherwise replace the lock. |
| Motor failed, discontinued model | Replace with a current model; we can match the key to your other doors. |
| Corroded cylinder on a coastal door | Rekey with new pins or swap the cylinder; consider a better-sealed lock next time. |
| Lock repeatedly drops offline | Fix Wi-Fi coverage first; only replace if the radio itself is faulty. |
Whatever we recommend, you get the price before any work begins. See smart lock installation if a replacement is the answer, keypad deadbolts if you would rather drop the app, or lock replacement when the door hardware itself is done.
Smart Lock Repair: common questions
Why does my smart lock say jammed?
The motor tried to throw the bolt and met resistance. Nine times out of ten the bolt is hitting the strike plate or a shallow pocket in the frame. Test it with the door open: if it works, the door needs alignment, which we fix on-site and then recalibrate the lock.
Can you repair a smart lock or do I have to replace it?
Most calls end in a repair, because most problems are alignment, batteries or connectivity rather than the lock. When a part has failed we replace it if the manufacturer supplies parts. If the lock is discontinued or the board has died, replacement is usually the better value, and we will say so.
My smart lock keeps going offline. Is it broken?
Usually not. Weak Wi-Fi at the door, a 5 GHz-only network, or a router that assigns the lock a new address after a reboot are the common causes. We test signal at the door and re-pair the lock. If the radio has failed the lock will not connect even with strong signal, which is rare.
Why do the batteries die so fast?
Almost always because the motor is working too hard against a binding bolt, or because the lock is constantly reconnecting to a weak Wi-Fi signal. Fresh alkaline batteries plus fixing the underlying cause restores normal life. Rechargeable batteries also trigger early low-battery warnings on many locks.
The keypad stopped responding. Can it be fixed?
Sometimes. First we rule out dead batteries and a loose exterior cable. If the keypad membrane or touchscreen has worn out, some brands sell the exterior assembly as a part, which we can fit. Otherwise a replacement lock is the practical fix and we can match its key to your other doors.
Do you work on smart locks you did not install?
Yes. Most of our repair calls are for locks installed by builders, previous owners or homeowners themselves. Tell us the brand and the symptom when you book so we bring the right parts.
