Yale Assure Lock 2 Won't Lock or Calibrate: What to Check

Quick answer

The Yale Assure Lock 2 learns its locked and unlocked positions during calibration, and a bolt that drags on the strike plate fails it. Open the door, run the lock, and if it works freely with the door open, fix the strike, not the lock. Then check the thumbturn orientation, that the Wi-Fi or Z-Wave module is seated, and that the four AA batteries are fresh alkaline cells.

Key takeaways

  • Calibration teaches the lock where locked and unlocked are. Anything that makes the bolt drag during that routine makes it fail.
  • Test with the door open. If the lock runs cleanly with the door open and struggles closed, the strike plate needs adjusting.
  • The interior assembly has to go on with the bolt and thumbturn in the orientation the manual shows, or the lock learns backwards.
  • Offline usually means the module is not fully seated or the batteries are low. Reseat, then replace.
  • Key-free models open with a 9-volt held to the terminals under the keypad. Keyed models use a KW1 cylinder that can be rekeyed to your Kwikset key.

The Yale Assure Lock 2 is one of the more forgiving smart deadbolts to install, but it has one habit that generates calls: it will not pretend a door is fine. If the bolt drags, the lock fails calibration, stops short, or reports a jam. Most of the time the fix is on the door frame, and you can find it in ten minutes with the door open.

What does calibration actually do?

When you set up an Assure Lock 2, the app runs a calibration routine. The lock runs the bolt through locked and unlocked and records where each position is, so the motor knows where to stop later.

That only works if the bolt moves freely during the routine. A bolt that hits the strike plate, catches on the door edge or drags on swollen weatherstripping stops early, and the lock records the wrong positions or reports a failed calibration. That is why we run calibration with the door open, then close it and check the fit separately. Yale’s own first check for a failed calibration is the strike pocket: the hole in the frame should be at least 1 inch deep and 1 inch wide so the bolt can extend fully.

The ten-minute checks

1. Put in four fresh alkaline AAs

The Assure Lock 2 runs on four AA batteries. Low cells make the motor weak, so a bolt that would normally push through a little resistance now stalls. Swap in fresh alkaline batteries from one pack before you diagnose anything else. If they were dead enough to lock you out, our dead battery guide covers getting in.

2. Run the lock with the door open

Open the door and lock and unlock from the keypad or the app several times. If the bolt runs cleanly, the lock is fine. Every problem you saw with the door closed is the door.

If the bolt struggles even with the door open, remove the interior unit and turn the deadbolt with the key. A bolt that is stiff on its own is a bent or misaligned deadbolt body, and the fix is in the bore, not the electronics.

3. Check the strike plate

Close the door and turn the thumbturn by hand. It should move with one finger. If it needs a push, look at where the bolt meets the strike: the bolt is landing on the edge of the pocket instead of sliding in.

Fixes, in order of effort: replace the top hinge’s short screws with long ones into the stud, which lifts a sagging door; file the strike opening a little in the direction the bolt is catching; move the strike plate. Older Craftsman and Spanish homes in North Park and hillside homes in La Mesa have often settled enough that the strike is a quarter inch off from where it started.

4. Check the thumbturn and bolt orientation

The interior assembly goes on with the bolt retracted and the tailpiece horizontal, as the installation guide shows. Put it on with the bolt out, or the tailpiece a quarter turn off, and the lock learns the positions backwards or stops half way. If the lock locks when it should unlock, check the Lock Handing setting in the app first; if that does not fix it, take the interior off, reseat it per your model’s manual, and recalibrate.

5. Reseat the module

The Assure Lock 2 gets its radio from a plug-in module: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, or Z-Wave, depending on which you bought. The module sits in a slot inside the interior unit. A module a millimeter short of seated works for a while and then drops offline whenever the door slams. Pull it, look for bent pins, and push it back in until it is fully home. Check your model’s manual for the slot location.

Why does the lock keep unlocking, or refuse to stay locked?

Two different things look the same from the kitchen.

The first is auto-lock timing. If auto-lock is on and the bolt cannot seat, the lock throws, hits the strike, backs off, and tries again on the next timer. The activity log shows lock, unlock, lock, unlock with no person attached. Fix the strike and it stops.

The second is a feature doing its job. Auto-unlock, a schedule, a shared user’s phone, or a voice assistant routine can all send an unlock, and the log names the source. If your model has door-sensing, which tells the app whether the door is open or closed, a misplaced sensor can also confuse auto-lock; check your model’s manual for where the sensor sits. Why Your Smart Lock Unlocks by Itself walks through reading the log for every brand.

Offline: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Z-Wave

  • Wi-Fi module: needs usable signal at the door. Most Wi-Fi modules join 2.4 GHz networks; if your router merges bands under one name, give the 2.4 GHz band its own name and check your module’s manual. Fresh AAs come first, because low batteries drop Wi-Fi before the keypad.
  • Bluetooth: works from your phone at the door with no router. If the app cannot see the lock over Bluetooth, the batteries or the module are the problem, not the network.
  • Z-Wave: the lock has to be included in your hub within range of it. A hub across the house often needs a repeating device nearer the door. Excluding and re-including per your hub’s instructions clears most stuck pairings.

A factory reset is a last resort because it wipes codes and pairing. If you do reset, or the lock came with the house, pair it with a rekey of the cylinder on keyed models; our smart lock rekey and reset service handles both.

Key-free models: the 9-volt backup

The key-free Assure Lock 2 has no keyway. When the AAs die, two terminals at the bottom of the keypad take a 9-volt battery: press a fresh 9-volt alkaline against them, keep it pressed, wait a moment and wake the keypad, enter your code, and the bolt retracts. Then change the AAs. Keep a 9-volt somewhere outside the house, such as the car.

Keyed models: when to rekey the KW1 cylinder

The keyed Assure Lock 2 uses a KW1 keyway, the same family as Kwikset. A locksmith can rekey it to the Kwikset key on your other doors, or put a whole Kwikset house on one key through our keyed alike service. It cannot be keyed to a Schlage key; Which Key Do You Have? shows the difference.

Rekey rather than troubleshoot when the lock came with the house, when a key has gone missing, or when the override key is the only one and you want a spare on the house key. A key that turns but does not move the bolt is a tailpiece or seating problem, not a cylinder problem; reseat the interior and, if it repeats, call. Which models have a cylinder at all is covered in Can a Smart Lock Be Rekeyed?

When to call

Call when the bolt still binds after you have adjusted the strike and hinges, when calibration fails with the door open, when the interior will not seat squarely, when the module is seated and the lock still will not pair, or when a keyed model needs rekeying or a key-free model needs a code and account reset after a move. Our Yale page lists the models we install and service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Yale Assure Lock 2 say calibration failed?

Calibration runs the bolt out and back and records where it stops. If the bolt hits the strike plate, the door edge or a weatherstrip during that run, the positions are wrong and the lock reports a failure. Run calibration with the door open, make sure the thumbturn and bolt are oriented as the manual shows, then close the door and fix any rubbing before you rely on it.

Why won't my Yale lock all the way?

The bolt is stopping against the edge of the strike pocket. Close the door and turn the thumbturn by hand; if it needs force, the door has shifted or the strike is misaligned. Enlarge or move the strike so the bolt slides in freely. The motor is not designed to push through resistance, and forcing it drains batteries and wears the gears.

Why does my Yale Assure Lock 2 keep unlocking?

Check three things: an auto-unlock feature or schedule in the app, a shared user or voice assistant routine, and a bolt that bounces back because it cannot seat in the strike. The activity log in the app shows who or what sent each command. If the log shows lock then unlock a second apart with no user, the door is binding.

Why is my Yale Assure Lock 2 offline?

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module has to be fully seated in its slot inside the interior unit, and it needs usable Wi-Fi signal at the door, on the 2.4 GHz band for most Wi-Fi modules. Low batteries drop the module before the keypad. Replace the batteries with fresh alkaline AAs, reseat the module, and move a router or mesh node closer if the signal at the door is weak.

What batteries does the Yale Assure Lock 2 use?

Four AA batteries. Use fresh alkaline cells from the same pack unless Yale's instructions for your model say otherwise. Mixed, old or rechargeable cells sit at a different voltage and cause early low-battery warnings and odd behavior like a lock that stalls part way. On key-free models, keep a 9-volt in the car as the emergency power source.

Can the Yale Assure Lock 2 be rekeyed to match my other locks?

The keyed version uses a KW1 keyway, the same family as Kwikset, so a locksmith can rekey it to match Kwikset locks on your other doors. It cannot be keyed to a Schlage key. The key-free version has no cylinder, so there is nothing to rekey; you reset it through the app instead.
