Halo and Halo Touch: install and Wi-Fi setup

Halo is a full-replacement deadbolt, so the install starts with the door, not the box. We test how the existing bolt throws with the door closed, fix a strike plate that is a few millimeters off, and tighten sagging hinges. A Halo motor that has to force the bolt will drain its four AA batteries in weeks and eventually report a jam.

With the door right, we mount the lock, run the calibration so it learns the bolt travel, and connect it to the 2.4 GHz band of your Wi-Fi from the Kwikset app. Then we add your codes, enroll fingerprints on a Halo Touch, set the auto-lock delay, and link Alexa or Google Home if you use them. You lock and unlock it from the keypad, the app and the key before we leave.

SmartKey: why Kwikset makes sense in a Kwikset house

With a working key and the small SmartKey tool, a SmartKey cylinder can be taught a new key in about a minute, no pinning kit needed. If the working key is gone, we reset the cylinder on site with a dedicated tool.

That is the practical reason to pick Kwikset when your home is already on Kwikset keys, which describes many tract homes built since the late 2000s in Eastlake and Otay Ranch, 4S Ranch and San Marcos. We set the new Halo to the key already on your ring, so the override key is the one you carry anyway.

Two limits to know: SmartKey cannot be master keyed, and it cannot share a key with Schlage or any other keyway. The full rekey process, with and without a key, lives on our Kwikset SmartKey rekey page.

Who Kwikset is right for, and who should look elsewhere

Kwikset is the value pick among the big three. Choose it when:

  • Your house is already on Kwikset keys and you want one key for every door.
  • You want a Wi-Fi keypad or fingerprint deadbolt and Alexa or Google Home is your assistant.
  • You want a keypad with no app at all. SmartCode does that well, and our keypad deadbolt page covers the whole category.
  • You run Ring Alarm or SmartThings and want the lock inside that system: Home Connect.

Halo and Halo Touch do not offer Apple Home Key, the tap-your-iPhone feature. Kwikset's newer Halo Select Plus does, as do the Schlage Encode Plus and Level Lock Pro, and Halo Select reaches Apple Home through Matter. If the rest of your house is on Schlage keys, a Schlage Encode keeps you on one key. And if the outside of the door cannot change, the August retrofit is the answer instead of any full-replacement lock.

Kwikset Halo not connecting, and other common problems

Most Halo trouble is the network, the batteries or the door.

  • Halo will not join Wi-Fi. The lock needs the 2.4 GHz band. A phone on 5 GHz during setup, a mesh system that merges the bands, or weak signal at the door all stall pairing. We test signal and pair from a phone on the right band. A new router or password means pairing again; codes keep working meanwhile.
  • Batteries dying fast. Usually a bolt that binds, sometimes a lock at the edge of Wi-Fi range. Fresh alkaline AAs and a strike adjustment fix most of it.
  • Fingerprint rejected on Halo Touch. Re-enroll each finger from several angles.
  • Old key still works. The SmartKey rekey did not complete; see the SmartKey rekey guide.

Anything else is on our smart lock repair page, and what to do when a smart lock battery dies covers the lockout case.

Kwikset smart locks across San Diego

Kwikset is the builder hardware in many newer San Diego tracts, which makes it the natural upgrade path: the keyway is already there, so a Halo on the front door and a SmartCode on the garage entry join the same key in one visit. We do that job constantly in Santee, Mira Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos.

Buying a home that already has a Halo or SmartCode on the door? Treat it like any lock you did not install: we rekey the SmartKey cylinder, factory reset the lock, remove the old owner from the app and set it up under your account. That is our smart lock rekey and reset service, and it folds neatly into a new home rekey. Same day in most cases anywhere in the county; request a quote with the model and your door type.

Kwikset Smart Locks: common questions

Can a Kwikset Halo be rekeyed?

Yes. Halo and Halo Touch use a SmartKey cylinder. With a working key and the SmartKey tool it can be taught a new key in about a minute, and we can set it to match the other Kwikset locks in your house. If the working key is lost, we reset the cylinder on site. The details are on our Kwikset SmartKey rekey page.

Does Kwikset Halo need a hub?

No. Halo and Halo Touch have Wi-Fi built in and talk straight to your router, so remote control works with no bridge or hub. SmartCode and Powerbolt have no connection at all and are programmed at the lock. Home Connect models are the exception: they use Z-Wave and need a hub such as Ring Alarm or SmartThings.

What is the difference between Kwikset Halo and Halo Touch?

Halo is a Wi-Fi deadbolt with a keypad, sold in touchscreen and push-button versions. Halo Touch swaps the keypad for a fingerprint reader, so you unlock with a finger, the app or the key rather than a code. Both have built-in Wi-Fi, a SmartKey cylinder and the same Kwikset app.

Why is my Kwikset Halo not connecting to Wi-Fi?

Almost always the network. Halo uses the 2.4 GHz band, so a phone on 5 GHz during setup or a mesh system that hides the bands will stall pairing, and weak signal at the door drops the lock offline later. Fresh batteries, a phone on 2.4 GHz and a signal test at the door fix most cases. We do all three on every install.

Does Kwikset Halo work with Apple Home Key?

The original Halo and Halo Touch do not; they are built around Alexa and Google Home. Kwikset's newer Halo Select Plus adds Apple Home Key, the feature that unlocks the door with an iPhone or Apple Watch tap, and Halo Select works with Apple Home through Matter. Schlage Encode Plus and Level Lock Pro have Home Key too. If you simply want to run a Halo from an iPhone, the Kwikset app does that.

Can you install a Kwikset lock I already bought?

Yes, and most of our Kwikset installs are customer-supplied locks. Keep it in the box, tell us the door type when you book, and we check the fit before opening it. If you would rather we supply it, we can bring Halo and SmartCode models in common finishes and quote the hardware up front.
