Level makes smart locks you cannot see. Level Bolt fits inside your existing deadbolt and keeps the outside hardware and your keys exactly as they are. Level Lock and Level Lock Pro are full deadbolts with their own keys, with Apple Home Key on the Lock Pro, which replaced the earlier Lock+ that we still service. We install them across San Diego County, confirm your deadbolt is compatible before we start, pair the Level app and Apple Home, and leave the door looking untouched.
What you get
- Level Bolt: invisible, keeps your exterior hardware and existing keys
- Level Lock Pro: full deadbolt with Apple Home Key and its own keys
- Deadbolt compatibility confirmed before we open the box
- Level app, Apple Home, Level Connect and Level Keypad set up on site
- Lock+ keyed alike with your other Schlage-keyway doors on request
Level Bolt: the smart lock nobody can see
Level Bolt replaces the bolt mechanism inside a standard deadbolt. Your exterior cylinder, your interior thumb-turn and your existing keys all stay, so from either side of the door nothing looks different. The motor and a single CR2 battery live inside the bolt itself.
You unlock from the Level app over Bluetooth, set auto-lock and share access with family. The current Bolt adds Matter over Thread, so with a Matter hub it joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings; earlier versions are Bluetooth with Apple Home.
Level Bolt is the right answer when you like the hardware already on your door, or when an HOA says the outside cannot change. It needs a single-cylinder deadbolt with a standard tailpiece; some exterior cylinders are not compatible, which we confirm on site before opening the box. If you want a retrofit with built-in Wi-Fi and a visible interior unit instead, compare the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock.
Level Lock Pro: a full deadbolt with Apple Home Key
Level Lock Pro is a complete deadbolt with a minimalist look that reads as a plain lock from the street: no keypad or screen. It replaces your existing deadbolt in the standard bore and comes with two keys. The standard Level Lock is the same kind of full replacement, with Matter over Thread and a physical key.
The Lock Pro supports Apple Home Key, so you tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock and the door opens without opening an app. It also works from the Level app over Bluetooth, and Matter over Thread is built in. Level renames and refreshes its lineup often. Its site now lists Level Lock Pro, Level Lock and Level Bolt, and the Lock Pro replaced the Level Lock+, the earlier Home Key model. We confirm the exact model and what is in the box before you buy.
Already have a Lock+? We still service it. Unlike a key-free lock, Lock+ keeps a physical keyway on a Schlage-style five-pin cylinder. We can rekey it and key it alike with other Schlage-keyway doors so one key covers the house. If you want Home Key plus a keypad on the same lock, the Schlage Encode Plus is the usual alternative; see the brands comparison for how they line up.

Level Connect and Level Keypad: remote access and codes
Level locks are Bluetooth-first, which keeps the battery small and the hardware invisible. The trade-off is range: your phone needs to be near the door. Two accessories fill the gaps.
- Level Connect is a Wi-Fi bridge. It is not in the Level Lock Pro box, though some Lock+ packages included one. Placed within Bluetooth range of the lock, it links the lock to your home network so you can lock, unlock and check status from anywhere and get notifications.
- Level Keypad is a separate keypad for code entry, mounted next to the door. It gives kids, a cleaner or a dog walker a code without a phone.
We set up both on install day when you want them. Current Matter versions can also reach the internet through a Matter hub or Thread border router. Level updates its lineup often, so we confirm what a given model has built in before promising remote access.
Level Bolt or Level Lock Pro: which one fits your door?
Both give you phone unlock, auto-lock and shared access. The choice comes down to what you want to see on the door and whether Apple Home Key matters.

Not sure which deadbolt you have? Send us a photo of the outside and inside of the lock and we will tell you whether Bolt fits or Lock Pro is the better route.
Compatibility and door prep
Both locks are built for the standard residential deadbolt prep: a 2-1/8 inch face bore and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. If a normal deadbolt fits your door today, a Level lock almost certainly does too.
Level Bolt has one extra requirement: a single-cylinder deadbolt with a standard tailpiece, the flat bar that runs from the outside cylinder to the bolt. Double-cylinder deadbolts with a key on both sides are out, and some exterior cylinders are not compatible. We check yours on site, or from a photo before we come.
Older doors are the other question. Craftsman and Spanish homes in Mission Hills, North Park and Kensington often have mortise locks or non-standard bores. Bolt cannot go inside a mortise lock, and Level Lock and Lock Pro need a standard bore, which we can cut when the door allows; see lock replacement and deadbolt installation.
Why period homes, HOA condos and Apple households choose Level
Period homes. A 1920s door in South Park or Mission Hills with original brass hardware deserves better than a plastic keypad. Level Bolt makes it a smart lock and nobody on the porch can tell.
HOA condos. Associations in Downtown, University City and Coronado often restrict changes to the exterior of unit doors. Bolt changes nothing outside, and Lock Pro reads as a plain deadbolt, which satisfies most appearance rules. Our HOA and condo lock rules guide covers what to check first.
Apple households. If everyone in the house carries an iPhone, Lock Pro with Home Key is the least-friction smart lock we install: tap and walk in, with access shared through the Home app.
ADUs and rentals. Bolt lets a landlord give a tenant app access while the door hardware and keys stay under the owner's control. Our ADU smart lock guide goes deeper.
Battery life, troubleshooting and rekeying
Each Level lock runs on a single CR2 battery. The app warns you when it is low, and your key always works regardless of battery state: the existing key on a Bolt, the supplied key on a Lock Pro or Lock+. We show you the battery swap on install day.
When a Level lock struggles it is usually one of three things: the bolt is binding in the strike so the small motor cannot finish the throw (we fix alignment on every install), Bluetooth is not reaching the lock, or Home Key setup was never completed on the phone. Our smart lock repair page covers the rest, and what to do when a smart lock battery dies has the lockout steps.
Rekeying is straightforward. A Bolt keeps your original cylinder, so we rekey that deadbolt as usual when you move in or lose a key. A Lock+ cylinder rekeys like any Schlage. Details in can a smart lock be rekeyed.
Level Smart Locks: common questions
Will Level Bolt work with my existing deadbolt?
Usually, if it is a single-cylinder deadbolt with a standard tailpiece in a standard bore. Double-cylinder deadbolts and mortise locks are not compatible, and a few exterior cylinders will not drive the Bolt. Send us a photo of both sides of your lock and we will confirm before booking.
Can a Level Lock+ be rekeyed?
Yes. Level Lock+ uses a Schlage-style five-pin cylinder, so a locksmith can rekey it and key it alike with other Schlage-keyway locks in your home. Level Bolt keeps your original exterior cylinder, so we rekey that deadbolt exactly as we would have before the Bolt went in.
Does Level work with Apple Home Key?
Level Lock Pro supports Apple Home Key: you tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock to open the door. The earlier Level Lock+ has it too. Level Bolt works with Apple Home and the Level app but does not have Home Key, because there is no exterior reader to tap. Check the exact model name when you buy.
Do I need Wi-Fi for a Level lock?
No. Level locks work over Bluetooth from your phone at the door, and the key always works. Wi-Fi only matters if you want to unlock remotely or get notifications away from home, and for that you add the Level Connect bridge or, on current Matter models, a Matter hub. We do not assume built-in Wi-Fi on any Level model without checking it.
What happens when the Level battery dies?
Your key opens the door as it always has, since the mechanical cylinder does not depend on the battery. The app warns you well before that point. Swapping the CR2 battery takes a few minutes and we walk you through it on install day.
Can I add a keypad to a Level lock?
Yes. Level Keypad is a separate keypad that mounts beside the door and gives family, cleaners or tenants a code without a phone. It keeps the lock itself looking plain, which is the whole appeal of Level. We confirm keypad compatibility for your exact lock model and set the codes up on the day.
