Why the Yale Assure Lock 2 suits hosts and smart homes
The Assure Lock 2 is built like a kit. You pick a touchscreen or push-button keypad and a keyed or key-free body. Bluetooth is built in, so the Yale Access app and Apple Home work at the door with no module at all. Then plug in the module that matches your home: Wi-Fi for remote access or Z-Wave for a hub.
It runs on four AA batteries and has auto-lock. The Yale Access app shares its platform with August, so the two brands live in one app if you mix them, and the Wi-Fi version integrates well with the tools vacation rental hosts use to send guest codes automatically.
Two step-up versions exist: the Assure Lock 2 Plus adds Apple Home Key, and the Assure Lock 2 Touch adds a fingerprint reader. Compare Yale with the rest on our brands page or in the Encode vs Assure vs Halo guide.
Assure Lock 2 variants compared
Same door prep, same modules, four ways to open the door.
| Variant | Keypad | Ways in | Key override | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Assure Lock 2, keyed | Touchscreen or push-button | Code, app, key | Yes, Kwikset-style KW1 cylinder, rekeyable | Family homes, one key for every door |
| Assure Lock 2, key-free | Touchscreen or push-button | Code, app; 9-volt terminals for emergency power | None | Rentals and ADUs, no key copies to track |
| Assure Lock 2 Plus | Touchscreen | Code, app, Apple Home Key tap | None, key-free only | iPhone and Apple Watch households |
| Assure Lock 2 Touch | Touchscreen or push-button | Code, app, fingerprint | Keyed or key-free | Anyone who hates carrying anything |
The Plus is key-free only, the Touch comes keyed or key-free, and no Yale model offers fingerprint and Home Key together, so we confirm the exact model before you buy. Some retail bundles ship with the Wi-Fi module already in the box, which saves buying it separately.

Which module: Wi-Fi, Z-Wave or none
- Wi-Fi module. The one most people want. Remote lock and unlock, an activity log, scheduled and one-time codes, voice assistant support and the host tool integrations. It uses the most battery, so the door needs a usable Wi-Fi signal, usually on the 2.4 GHz band.
- Z-Wave module. For homes already on a Z-Wave hub such as SmartThings or Ring Alarm. Control runs through the hub, and the radio sips less power than Wi-Fi.
- Matter. Yale lists a Matter module for the Assure Lock 2 as coming soon; for a Matter home today, Yale sells a separate lock, the Yale Smart Lock with Matter.
- No module. Bluetooth only: the app and Apple Home work when you are at the door, codes keep working, and there is nothing remote to maintain. Add a module later without touching the door; a true no-app option is on our keypad locks page.
Keyed or key-free: how to decide
The answer depends on who holds keys.
Keyed means a Kwikset-style KW1 cylinder under the keypad. It can be rekeyed, it can share a key with every Kwikset lock in the house, and a dead battery is solved with the key on your ring. Pick it for an owner-occupied home, a garage entry door, or any house already on Kwikset keys, which describes many newer tract homes in Eastlake and Otay Ranch and 4S Ranch.
Key-free has no keyway at all. Nothing to pick, nothing to rekey, no key copies drifting between guests, cleaners and past tenants. Emergency power comes from a 9-volt battery held to the terminals on the bottom of the keypad. Pick it for a short-term rental, a tenant door or an ADU where access should be codes only.
Unsure? Keyed is the safer default for a home you live in. Key-free is the cleaner default for a rental.
Installing and setting up an Assure Lock 2
Most Assure Lock 2 installs take under an hour on a standard door with a 2-1/8 inch bore.
- Door first. We check bolt travel with the door closed and fix the strike or hinges before the lock goes on. The Yale motor is strong, but a rubbing bolt still eats batteries.
- Fit the lock. Exterior keypad, interior body, module in its slot, four AA batteries, then calibrate so the lock learns its locked and unlocked positions.
- Pair. Yale Access app over Bluetooth, then Wi-Fi if you chose that module, then your voice assistant or hub. On the Plus we add it to Apple Home and set up Home Key; on the Touch we enroll each fingerprint from several angles.
- Codes and settings. Family and guest codes, auto-lock timing, keypad sounds, and a walkthrough of the key or 9-volt backup before we leave.
Assure Lock 2 for San Diego vacation rentals
Hosts in Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and La Jolla pick the Yale for one reason: with the Wi-Fi module, the host tools they already use can create a guest code that starts at check-in and expires at check-out without anyone touching the lock. The activity log shows when cleaners came and went.
The key-free body removes the last loose end, the metal key that a guest copies or forgets to return. If the property has a gate or garage entry we can put a keypad there too, and a plain keypad on the owner closet.
Short-term rentals inside the City of San Diego need an STRO license, and hosts should check current rules. The platform links, multi-unit tips and turnover routine are on our vacation rental smart lock page and in smart locks for Airbnb in San Diego.
Yale lock rekeying, resets and troubleshooting
Rekey. Keyed Assure Lock 2 models have a KW1 cylinder we rekey in about ten minutes, on its own or keyed alike with your Kwikset doors. The Schlage Encode uses a Schlage keyway, so the two cannot share a key without swapping cylinders. Key-free models are secured by a factory reset and new codes instead. Both paths are on our rekey and reset page and in can a smart lock be rekeyed.
Troubleshooting. A Yale that reports jammed or drains batteries is nearly always a door alignment problem. A touchscreen that ignores touches usually wants fresh alkaline batteries. A lock that dropped out of the app needs a Bluetooth re-pair, then Wi-Fi. Dead batteries on a key-free door: hold a 9-volt to the terminals under the keypad, enter your code, then replace the AAs. Everything else is on our smart lock repair page.
Yale Smart Locks: common questions
Should I get the keyed or key-free Yale Assure Lock 2?
Keyed if the lock goes on a home you live in, if you want one key for every door, or if you like a metal key as the dead-battery backup. Key-free if it goes on a rental or ADU and you want access to be codes only, with no key copies to track. Both take the same modules.
Can a Yale Assure Lock 2 be rekeyed?
The keyed version, yes. It uses a Kwikset-style KW1 cylinder that we rekey on-site like any Kwikset deadbolt and can key alike with your other Kwikset locks. The key-free version has no cylinder; for that one, a factory reset and new codes are the equivalent step.
Which module do I need for the Yale Assure Lock 2?
Wi-Fi for remote access, voice assistants and vacation rental tools. Z-Wave if you run a SmartThings, Ring Alarm or similar hub. For Matter, Yale lists an Assure Lock 2 module as coming soon and sells a separate Yale Smart Lock with Matter. No module at all if Bluetooth at the door is enough, since that and Apple Home are built in. The module slides into the interior unit and can be changed later.
What happens if the battery dies on a key-free Yale lock?
Hold a 9-volt battery to the two terminals on the bottom of the keypad. The keypad wakes up, you enter your code, and the door opens. Then replace the four AA batteries inside. The lock warns you in the app and at the keypad well before this point, so it is rarely a surprise.
Does the Yale Assure Lock 2 work with Airbnb and vacation rental tools?
With the Wi-Fi module, yes. The Yale Access platform is widely supported by the host tools that generate guest codes from bookings, so codes appear and expire on their own. Tell us which platform you use and we will confirm the link works before we leave.
Does the Yale Assure Lock 2 work with Apple Home Key?
The Assure Lock 2 Plus does. An iPhone or Apple Watch tap at the lock opens the door, on top of codes and the app. The standard Assure Lock 2 does not include Home Key, so check the exact model name before buying if that feature matters to your household.
