For most San Diego homes the best smart lock is a Wi-Fi keypad deadbolt with a physical key backup, such as the Schlage Encode or Yale Assure Lock 2. Choose a retrofit like the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock to keep your existing keys, a Schlage Encode Plus or Level Lock Pro for Apple Home Key, and a plain keypad deadbolt if you never want an app.
Key takeaways
- A keypad deadbolt with a real keyway is the safest all-round choice: codes for daily use, a key when batteries die.
- Retrofit locks like the August keep your exterior deadbolt and keys, which sidesteps most HOA appearance rules.
- Near the coast, finish and lubrication matter more than brand. Corroded cylinders fail before motors do.
- Older doors in North Park, Kensington and Mission Hills can need adapting before any smart lock fits.
- Most smart lock failures we see are door alignment problems, not lock problems. Fix the door first.
How do we pick a smart lock for a San Diego door?
Most smart lock regrets come from buying by brand or by price and ignoring the door. Before we recommend anything we look at four things: whether the bolt and strike line up cleanly, how far the door is from the Wi-Fi router, who needs to get in and how often, and whether an HOA has a say in what the outside of the door looks like.
Then we match the lock to the job. A landlord in El Cajon turning over units wants codes, not apps. A host in Mission Beach wants remote codes that expire on their own. A family on a new build in Carmel Valley wants Apple Home Key and a clean look.
Which smart locks do we actually recommend?
Best overall: Schlage Encode
Built-in Wi-Fi, a real keypad and a standard Schlage keyway, so a key still works when the batteries are dead. It runs on four AA batteries, holds plenty of user codes and pairs with the Schlage Home app with no hub. The keyway can be rekeyed like any other Schlage, which matters if you inherit one with a house. The brand-by-brand answer is in Can a Smart Lock Be Rekeyed?
Best retrofit: August Wi-Fi Smart Lock
Replaces only the inside thumb-turn. Your exterior deadbolt, your keys and the look of the door stay the same, which makes it the easy answer in condos where the association controls the exterior. Auto-unlock as you walk up and auto-lock behind you are its strengths. There is no keypad unless you add August’s separate keypad accessory.
Best for Airbnb and vacation rentals: Schlage Encode or Yale Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi
Both accept scheduled codes that start and end on their own, both report lock status remotely, and both are widely supported by the tools hosts use to automate guest codes. The Yale comes in a key-free version if you never want a keyway on a rental door. The full setup is in our Airbnb smart lock guide.
Best no-app keypad: Schlage BE365 keypad deadbolt
No Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no app, no account. Codes are programmed at the door and it runs for a long time on a single 9V battery. This is what we install for older relatives, for landlords who want a code per tenant, and for anyone who wants keypad convenience without a connected device to maintain. See our keypad locks without an app service.
Best for Apple Home: Schlage Encode Plus or Level Lock Pro
Both support Apple Home Key, so a tap of an iPhone or Apple Watch opens the door. The Encode Plus adds a keypad and Wi-Fi. The Level Lock Pro, which replaced the Level Lock+, hides the electronics inside the door and looks like a plain deadbolt, which associations like, at the cost of having no keypad unless you add Level’s separate keypad.
Best budget: Kwikset SmartCode 260 or Kwikset Halo
The SmartCode 260 is a basic keypad deadbolt with Kwikset’s SmartKey cylinder, so you can rekey it yourself in a minute with the original key. Step up to the Halo if you want Wi-Fi and app control, often at a lower price than the Schlage.
Worth a look: Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro
Fingerprint, keypad, app and a physical key on one lock. Popular with people who hate carrying anything. It is bulkier than the others, so check that it suits your door and your HOA’s rules. The complete list of what we fit is on our smart lock brands page.

What does San Diego do to a smart lock?
Salt air near the coast
Within a mile or so of the water, bright brass tarnishes and pits. Choose a coated finish such as satin nickel, matte black or aged bronze, keep the keyway lubricated with a dry lubricant, and expect to change batteries a little more often because the motor works harder against a sticky bolt. In Ocean Beach and Point Loma, a corroded cylinder is a more common failure than a dead motor.
HOA and condo rules
Many downtown and University City associations control the finish and style of your door’s exterior. A retrofit like the August or an inside-the-door Level Lock Pro avoids the argument. Read what your HOA can and cannot control before you buy anything.
Older doors in central neighborhoods
Craftsman and Spanish-style homes in North Park, Kensington and Mission Hills often have original doors from the 1920s to 1950s, some with mortise locks, non-standard bore holes or thick slabs. Most smart locks assume a modern 2-1/8 inch bore and a door between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches thick. Those doors can be adapted, but it is a locksmith job, not a weekend project.
New construction in the master-planned communities
Builder-grade deadbolts in 4S Ranch and Carmel Valley to the north and Otay Ranch in Chula Vista are often Kwikset, many of them SmartKey. They swap to a smart lock in under an hour with no drilling, and the doors tend to be well aligned, which is why smart locks last longer on newer homes.
Should I install it myself?
If the door latches without a shove and the bolt slides freely with the door both open and closed, you can probably install a basic keypad yourself. If the bolt rubs, the door sags, the holes are not standard or you are dealing with a fire-rated condo door, call a locksmith. Most of the smart lock failures we get called to are alignment problems that no lock can fix on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Do smart locks work without Wi-Fi?
Yes. Keypad codes and physical keys work at the door with no internet at all. Wi-Fi only adds remote features such as unlocking from your phone, activity alerts and codes you can change from anywhere. If your router is far from the front door, a keypad model still does its main job every day.
Will a smart lock fit my older San Diego door?
Most smart locks expect a standard 2-1/8 inch bore hole, a 1-inch latch bore and a door between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches thick. Many pre-1960 doors in central San Diego have mortise locks, smaller holes or thicker slabs. They can usually be adapted, but it is a locksmith job rather than a swap.
How long do smart lock batteries last?
Makers rate Wi-Fi models at roughly three to six months on a set of AAs, and keypad-only and Bluetooth-only locks longer, depending on how often the door is used and how cleanly the bolt throws. A bolt that rubs the strike plate is the number one cause of short battery life.
Can a smart lock be rekeyed?
Keyed models with a standard keyway, including the Schlage Encode, Yale keyed versions, Kwikset Halo and Level Lock+, can be rekeyed just like a regular deadbolt. Key-free models have nothing to rekey; you reset the codes instead. Retrofits like the August keep your original cylinder, which we rekey the normal way.
Are smart locks as secure as a regular deadbolt?
The bolt itself is what stops a door being forced, and good smart locks use the same one-inch throw deadbolt as their mechanical cousins. Look for ANSI/BHMA grading on the box, install it on a properly reinforced strike plate, and treat the codes like keys: unique per person and removed when they leave.
Which finish holds up best near the beach?
Coated finishes such as satin nickel, matte black and aged bronze outlast bright brass within a mile of the water. Whatever you pick, use a dry lubricant in the keyway twice a year and wipe salt film off the keypad. [Corrosion](/guides/salt-air-coastal-corrosion-locks-san-diego/), not electronics, is what we replace most often in coastal neighborhoods.
