Quick answer

Across the San Diego market, smart lock installation labor typically runs $100 to $250 per door, plus the lock itself, which ranges from a budget keypad deadbolt to a premium Apple Home Key model. A straight swap on a well-aligned door sits at the low end. Door prep, a misaligned strike, a new deadbolt bore or a multipoint door pushes it higher. Our rates are on our pricing page.

Key takeaways

  • Two numbers make the total: labor for the install and the price of the lock. Ask for both before booking.
  • Labor typically runs $100 to $250 per door across San Diego, with a clean swap at the low end and door work at the top.
  • The door drives the price more than the lock: alignment, thickness, an existing deadbolt bore and multipoint hardware.
  • A proper install includes alignment, pairing, codes and the key override rekeyed to your house key, not just screws.
  • A second door in the same visit usually costs less than the first because the trip is already paid for.

Smart lock pricing confuses people because the lock and the labor get quoted separately, and the labor depends on the door more than on the lock. This guide gives typical San Diego market ranges, explains what pushes a job up or down, lists what a proper install should include, and helps you decide whether to do it yourself. These are market ranges, not a quote. Our own rates are on the pricing page.

Labor vs hardware: the two numbers

Labor is what a locksmith charges to fit the lock, adjust the door, pair the electronics and set you up. Across San Diego it typically runs $100 to $250 per door.

Hardware is the lock. Typical market prices run roughly:

  • Keypad-only deadbolt with no app: roughly $60 to $150.
  • Wi-Fi keypad deadbolt such as a Schlage Encode, Yale Assure Lock 2 or Kwikset Halo: roughly $150 to $350.
  • Premium models with Apple Home Key or fingerprint, and retrofits with their accessories: at the top of that range or above.
  • Multipoint door hardware: often the most expensive part of the job, sometimes several hundred dollars for the mechanism alone.

Prices move with sales and generations, so treat these as tiers. Which lock is worth the money is covered in Best Smart Locks for San Diego Homes.

What drives the price up?

Door prep

Most smart locks assume a modern prep: a 2-1/8 inch bore, a 1-inch edge bore and a door between 1-3/8 and 1-3/4 inches thick. Newer tract homes in Carmel Valley almost always match, which is why installs there sit at the low end. Craftsman and Spanish-style doors in North Park often have smaller holes, mortise locks or thick slabs that need adapting.

A misaligned strike

If the bolt rubs the strike plate or you have to pull the door to lock it, the lock will fail early. Fixing that means moving or enlarging the strike, sometimes adjusting hinges. It adds time, and it is the single most valuable thing a locksmith does on a smart lock job.

Adding a deadbolt bore

A door with only a keyed knob needs a new hole for the deadbolt and a matching hole in the jamb. That is jig work, and it is priced like a new deadbolt installation plus the smart lock setup.

Thick, metal and fire-rated doors

Condo corridor doors are often fire-rated with a closer, and some entry doors are steel or thicker than the standard range. Both need the right extension kits and care not to defeat the rating. Expect the upper part of the range.

Multipoint doors

French and patio doors with locks that throw bolts at several heights when you lift the handle do not take a standard smart lock. The options are a smart cylinder or a purpose-built multipoint smart handle, and the hardware is usually the expensive part. See our French and multipoint door lock page before you buy anything.

Retrofit vs full replacement

A retrofit like the August or Level Bolt keeps the exterior deadbolt, so there is no drilling and no rekey question. A full replacement takes the old lock off and often includes rekeying the new key override to the house key. Labor is similar on an aligned door; the difference shows up when the old deadbolt is worn and needs to be replaced first.

Two doors in one visit

The trip is the fixed part. A second lock in the same visit typically costs less than the first, which is why front door plus garage entry door is the common pairing. Older homes in La Mesa often add a keypad on the garage entry door while the Wi-Fi lock goes on the front.

Timing

Weekday business hours are the least expensive. Evenings, weekends and true emergencies may carry a surcharge. If the job can wait a day, it usually costs less.

What a proper install includes

A price that covers only screwing the lock to the door is not a complete install. Expect all of this:

  1. Alignment check with the door closed, and strike adjustment if the bolt binds.
  2. Fitting the lock to your door thickness and backset, with the old hardware removed and bagged.
  3. Pairing to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or a bridge, and confirming the signal actually reaches the door.
  4. Codes and users set up, with auto-lock and keypad settings configured.
  5. Rekeying the key override to your existing house key so the backup is on your ring, which is our keyed-alike work.
  6. The backup walk-through: how the lock opens when the battery dies, whether by key, 9-volt terminals or USB.
  7. Fresh batteries and a test from both sides.

Ask for that list before booking. It is the difference between a lock that lasts and a return visit.

DIY vs a locksmith

If your door latches without a shove, the bolt slides freely with the door both open and closed, and the holes are standard, a basic keypad or Wi-Fi deadbolt is a reasonable weekend job with a screwdriver. Read the manual, keep the old parts and pair it before you put the tools away.

Call a locksmith when any of these is true:

  • The bolt rubs or the door sags.
  • There is no deadbolt today.
  • The door is older, thicker, metal or fire-rated.
  • It is a French or multipoint door.
  • You want the key override keyed to the rest of the house.
  • You want one visit for two doors and someone to call if it does not pair.

Most of the smart lock repair calls we take are alignment problems on locks that were installed correctly by the manual and incorrectly for the door.

How does this compare with a rekey?

A rekey is labor only and keeps your locks, which is why a whole house often rekeys for less than one smart lock costs installed. If old keys are the worry and you do not need codes or an app, How Much Does It Cost to Rekey a House in San Diego? is the better guide. If you want codes without the app and the price that comes with it, a keypad deadbolt sits between the two; Keypad Lock vs Smart Lock explains the difference.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a locksmith charge to install a smart lock?

In San Diego, install labor for a single smart lock typically runs $100 to $250 across the market, depending on the door. A standard deadbolt swap on a modern door is at the low end; adding a deadbolt bore, fixing alignment or working on a thick or multipoint door moves it up. The lock is priced separately. Our own rates are on our pricing page.

Is it cheaper to buy the smart lock myself?

Often about the same. Buying your own lets you shop sales, and any reputable locksmith will install a lock you supply. Having the locksmith supply it means the right model shows up for your door, the keyway matches your other locks, and a defective unit is their problem. Either way, labor is the same, so choose by convenience.

How long does smart lock installation take?

A swap on a well-aligned door with a standard prep takes about 30 to 60 minutes including pairing, codes and the rekey of the key override. Adding a deadbolt bore, adjusting a strike or adapting an older door can push a visit past an hour. Two doors in one visit usually run under two hours.

Do I need a new hole in my door for a smart lock?

Only if the door has no deadbolt today or the existing holes are non-standard. Most smart locks fit the standard 2-1/8 inch bore and 1-inch edge bore that modern deadbolts use. Doors with only a keyed knob, older doors with small holes and slabs outside the usual thickness range need prep, which is where the labor moves up.

Does the install price include setting up the app and codes?

It should. A complete install ends with the lock paired to your Wi-Fi or bridge, your codes set, auto-lock configured, and you shown how the backup works when the battery dies. Ask before booking, because a price that covers only mounting the lock leaves the hardest part to you.

Is it cheaper to install two smart locks at once?

Yes, in most cases. The trip and setup are already paid for by the first lock, so a second door in the same visit typically adds less than the first. Front door plus garage entry door is the common pairing. If both locks share a keyway, they get keyed alike to one house key at the same time.
